The Mother-in-Law Dress

Unlike many other women, I have a good relationship to my mother-in-law. In fact, she is one of the nicest persons in my family!
Look what she gave me on her last visit:

I's an old dress of hers in cotton fabric in one of my favorite colors and with polka dots! It has quite broad shoulders with puffed sleeves, pleats at the neckline, and is buttoned down at the back. There has also been a belt, but it got lost and doesn't exist anymore.
There was also an extra collar to go with it, but with no possibility to attach it to the dress.

The tag inside says "VEB Exquisit Moden, Berlin". "VEB" stands for  "Volkseigener Betrieb", the legal status of all companies in the former German Democratic Republic. So it's clear that the dress is old, probably from the 80s.

So I made my first try in up cycling! After a lot of pinning, ripping and basting I got this:

I removed the sleeves completely to get those oversized shoulders. The armholes are now finished with bias tape. I narrowed the whole dress and added two waist darts in the front and two darts in the back. I liked the collar so much, I just stitched it definitely to the dress. And I added an old belt that I had in my closet for years.

My hope was to have enough fabric so I could end up with a gathered skirt, but it was not possible. So I left the buttoned down back as it was.

And now I have a totally new dress! Thank you so much, mother-in-law!
Edit: my mother-in-law sent me a picture of herself wearing the dress! The photo dates from ca. 1972.

The orange Burda dress: reality

If only I had known - I would have made this dress earlier!

The pattern is from Burdastyle magazine 5/2010, no. 102, and I was really afraid that it would come out  too wide and baggy, obsessing so much over this question that I never could bring myself to actually make it. But no problem at all, the dress turned out like I hoped: with a narrow enough high waist and a nice flared skirt and wide hem. I didn't make any alterations concerning the width of the dress. I reduced the width of the sleeves, though. Maybe the alteration that I didn't do only this time is of more interest: usually I have to shorten the bodice between my bust and waist for 2 cm. After measuring the pattern, I decided that this time I would not shorten anything, which was a good idea. So, if you want to make this dress, too, and have normal height, you might want to lengthen the bodice!

The back view:
Die Rückenansicht:

I was a bit afraid of making the rouleau loops for the button loops, but they actually went well (the second time) with a bit of patience.

What was worse was covering all those buttons with fabric - what a terrible and fiddly work! I almost gave up on those...

I'm really happy with this dress! Having said this, this is the only red garment in my closet since I'm old enough to chose what to wear on my own. I usually NEVER wear any red, and I don't like this color! I made an exception for this dress since I could not find any orange fabric, but felt that this pattern should be made up in a bright red or orange to work as desired. So, really a special dress!

The orange Burda dress: an illusion?

This is a dress from the Burda 5/2010 issue:

Das ist ein Kleid aus der Burda 5/2010:

Since that issue came out, I'm swooning over this photo. I love the button loops and pin tucks at the front, the bright color that gives these traditional elements a fresh new look, and the great hem width. But I did not dare to make it so far.

Have a look at the technical drawing:

Das ist die technische Zeichnung dazu:

The dress seems to be nothing more than a lengthened blouse (although a very pretty one), and there is nothing left from the nice flare of the skirt part in the photo above. And the waist is not very well defined, either. As an experienced Burda reader, if you look carefully at the photo above, you can also see that the waist is quite wide. And I don't want to end up with an orange sack dress.

However, on the magazine page where every model is put on a dress form this dress looks a bit different again:

This is how I would love this dress. But I cannot quite recognize the dress from the technical drawing in this photo. Did the Burda people use the old display window trick and pinned the back to make the waist more fitted? (How odd would that be? As the magazine photos often don't show the garment very well, we have to rely on these dress form photos to see the silhouette of the patterns...)

I finally decided to test it out. I'll make this dress and see how it fits. I will start with basting all those seams, and if it's too wide, maybe I can take the vertical back seams in to come a bit closer to the dress in the last photo. Or I can make a belt to go with it. Maybe I'll get another idea during the process. If everything fails, I can cut the dress below the waist and make it a blouse!

Glowing Green Dots

First of all, thank you for your comments to my last sewing failure! And special thanks to Frauke, who is so kind to give the pattern book a new home and saving it from being thrown away!

This is me in my vacation, in a fantastic bookstore in Helsinki, buying yet another sewing book (and some finnish cookbooks), and in my newest self-made dress! Tina has already made several versions from this pattern (see here, and here, and here), and they all look really nice, so I decided to make one myself!

The pattern is Simplicity 7051, which is a reprint from a vintage 60's pattern. I looked through my collection of vintage patterns and found out that I even already own the original one!

As vintage patterns are only one-size, I had to grade it down a bit. I also added more flare to the skirt part, for more comfort around my bigger hips. What do you think?

As it is not a dress for hot summer days, I decided to line the dress completely with Bemberg lining, so that I can also wear it with tights without the dress sticking to them all the time. The fabric is a printed cotton, quite stiff for a dress fabric but for this sort of dress it works well. I so love the printed pattern! What looks like glowing green dots from afar is in fact small green blossoms!

What can I say? I'm really happy with this dress! Great for a summer day strolling through Helsinki!

Ich bin glücklich mit diesem Kleid! Perfekt für einen Sommerbummel durch Helsinki!

A Waste of Time and Fabric

I finally made a dress I had on my list of future projects since quite a while. I had seen a version of this dress on the Burdastyle site which I loved, made by Burdastyle member Mishiko.

photo by mishiko, member of Burdastyle.com

The pattern is from the famous Stylish Dress Book by Yoshiko Tsukiori. So I bought the book, and made the dress from the same pattern myself, but it doesn't look anything like the coveted dress.

Instead, I feel like being put into a toddler's dress. And although the dress is very wide, it's not even comfortable!

It doesn't look better from the back, either.

I made photos from the side view too, but I want to spare you and me posting these. Just believe me that I look like something between a tent and a pregnant sea cow.

This dress is a total failure. Still, I tried to "save" it, ripped off the back and pinned it on my dress form, with the side seams taken in and less flare.

But it still does not look like something I would like to wear. And I totally lost my motivation for any further work on this dress. The dress will go into the garbage.

I was thinking about what was the reason for the failure. I think that it's the pattern. I also have to admit that I had suspected something like that before (although I didn't expect it to be that bad). These japanese dresses look really cute made up in the pattern books, but they are all very loose fitting. Maybe the style looks better on very slim girls than on short and compact persons like me. I will get back to the good old Burdastyle patterns and vintage patterns now.

One remaining problem: in my enthusiasm and while making this dress, I had found the second edition of the Stylish Dress Book and already bought it. And now, that I don't have any need for it, it only takes up space on my bookshelf, and what I'd most like is putting it into the garbage together with the dress.

So, if anyone of you wants to have it, you can get it. Just leave me a comment that you want it by 19th of august, midnight CET. I don't care to which country I have to send it, I'll be happy to give it to anyone who gets more use out of it than I do. In the unlikely case that more than one person wants to have it, I'll draw a name by lot. Thanks for helping me out!
