Violet Tie Dress

I was invited to two weddings in may, and on one of the invitations there was written "black tie" for the evening part, so I needed a dress. As it was a wedding, black wasn't an option, and I wanted to have it knee length, too. And I had to be fast as there wasn't much time (although I have to say that buying one would not have been quicker). So I went with a variation of a pattern I've already sewn before.

Im Mai war ich zu zwei Hochzeiten eingeladen, und bei einer von beiden wurde auf der Einladungskarte für die Feier am Abend "Black Tie" gewünscht, also brauchte ich ein entsprechendes Kleid. Da es ja eine Hochzeit war, habe ich von der Farbe schwarz eher abgesehen, und ausserdem wollte ich das Kleid nur knielang haben, nicht bodenlang. Und ich musste schnell sein da nicht mehr viel Zeit war zum Nähen (ich bin mir aber sicher, dass Einkaufen auch nicht schneller gewesen wäre). Also habe ich mir mein Kleid aus schon mal genähten Schnittmustern zusammen gesetzt. 

I used Burdastyle 08/2010 for the bodice, which I had already used for my Vienna gala evening dress. This pattern features a short tulip skirt, but I am not so much in tulip skirts, so I used the skirt part of another Burda dress (Burdastyle 11/2007) instead.

Für das Oberteil habe ich den Schnitt aus der Burdastyle 08/2012 verwendet, mit dem ich auch schon mein Wiener Abendkleid genäht habe. Dieser Schnitt sieht einen knielangen Tulpenrock vor, aber Tulpenröcke sind nicht so mein Fall, also habe ich statt dessen den Rockteil eines anderen Burda-Kleides (Burdastyle 11/2007) verwendet. 

As for the bodice, I did not have enough time to add boning all around as I did for my Vienna gala dress with all the additional work that means. I was worried, though, that the back would crinkle or collapse as it is attached to the shoulder straps on very small points near the center back, so I added some spiral steel boning to the side seams and vertical back seams, while using the seam allowances of the lining as boning cases.

Ich hatte nicht genügend Zeit, um wie bei dem Wiener Abendkleid das ganze Oberteil mit Stäbchen zu verstärken. Befürchtete aber doch, dass es sich am Rücken zusammenstauchen würde, da hier das Oberteil nur an zwei kleinen Stellen an der Rückenmitte mit den Trägern verbunden ist. Darum habe ich eine schnelle Variante gewählt und nur in die Seitennähte und die hinteren Teilungsnähte des Innenfutters Spiralstäbchen eingebaut. Dafür habe ich die Nahtzugaben als Tunnel verwendet. 

The fabric is silk dupioni, which is a dream to work with, apart from that it frays like nothing. On some parts, my seam allowances were reduced to about half the width after trying on the dress one single time!

Bei dem Stoff handelt es sich um Dupion-Seide, die sich sehr gut näht, aber ausfranst wie nix Gutes. An manchen Stellen war die Nahtzugabe bis auf die Hälfte reduziert, nur nach einmal Anprobieren!

I underlined all of the bodice parts with silk organza. The skirt was underlined with some really stiff petticoat tulle - and embellished with some trim at the hem seam to hide the frayed fabric edge.

Um alles insgesamt etwas stabiler zu machen, habe ich das Oberteil komplett mit Seidenorganza unterlegt. Der Rockteil hat einen steifen Petticoat-Tüll als Unterlage bekommen und wurde an der inneren Saumkante mit etwas Spitze verziert, hauptsächlich um die Fransen an der Stoffkante zu verstecken.

Und hier ist die Rückenansicht mit der riesigen "Schleife", die eigentlich gar keine ist. Glücklicherweise kann ich das Kleid an- und ausziehen, ohne den Knoten zu öffnen, so dass ich ihn nicht im Rücken binden muss.

A Dotty Silk Dress

This is from Burdastyle magazine 8/2012, made up in a printed silk fabric. And I have to say I'm really surprised how warm a silk dress can be, especially when worn with woolen tights and a thin woolen t-shirt underneath. (And although you can't see it, I'm really happy with this dress, just concentrating on the self-timer of my camera…)

Dieser Seidenstoff hat länger nach einem passenden Schnitt gesucht und ihn nun in der Burdastyle 8/2012 gefunden. Und ich bin überrascht, wie warm so ein Seidenkleid sein kann, besonders mit wollenen Strumpfhosen und einem dünnen Wollshirt darunter. (Mit dem Kleid bin ich sehr glücklich, auch wenn es nicht so aussieht, da ich mich voll auf den Selbstauslöser konzentriert habe…)

The original pattern has the skirt longer in the back than in the front, but I was lazy and made my hem in an even length all around (it's so much easier to simply use the skirt marker). I also omitted the front neckline slit and added some yellow rickrack instead.

Eigentlich sollte der Rock hinten länger sein als vorn, aber ich war dann zu faul dazu und habe den Saum mit dem Rockabrunder gleichmässig lang gemacht. Der Schlitz am Halsausschnitt vorne hat mir auch nicht so gefallen, also habe ich den Halsausschnitt statt dessen mit etwas Zickzackend verziert, in der gleichen Farbe wie die Punkte auf dem Stoff. 

I also made the sleeves wider to make sure that they would be comfortable even with a long-sleeved tee underneath. They do feel comfortable and I can move my arms without restriction, but after wearing the dress a few times I noticed that there must be some strain at the front sleeve caps:

Die Ärmel habe ich extra weiter gemacht, damit sie auch ganz sicher bequem sind, auch mit einem Shirt darunter. Sie sind jetzt auch bequem und ich kann meine Arme gut in jede Richtung bewegen, aber nachdem ich das Kleid ein paar mal getragen habe, sind mir an den Ärmelkugelvorderkanten so komisch verschobene Punkte aufgefallen, die vorher nicht da waren und sicherlich ein Zeichen von zu viel Spannung irgendwo sind:

Which means I'll have to work on my sleeve adjustments. Although at the moment I don't have a clue where these strain lines come from. They are on both sleeves, but only at the front side, not at the back.

Das heisst also, dass ich an meinen Ärmelanpassungen noch arbeiten muss. Obwohl ich im Moment wirklich keine Ahnung habe, wo ich da was ändern muss. Diese Spannungszüge sind an beiden Ärmeln, und jeweils nur an der Vorderseite.

I hope to figure out the sleeve issue one day. Apart from that, this is a very comfortable dress, easy to wear and good for almost any occasion!

Ich hoffe, ich kriege irgendwann mal noch raus, was mit den Ärmeln nicht stimmt. Trotzdem ist das hier ein bequemes Kleid, das sich gut zu allen möglichen Gelegenheiten tragen lässt!

Not a Christmas Dress

I was invited to a wedding about two months ago and needed a dress for the occasion. So I made up this dress with dupioni silk from my stash and with Burda Firstrow pattern 713. It was also in the 11/2007 magazine. I altered the front neckline to have almost a boatneck instead of a deep V.

Ende Oktober war ich zu einer Hochzeit eingeladen und brauchte ein Kleid dafür. Ich habe also dieses Kleid genäht, mit Dupion-Seide aus meinem Vorrat und dem Burda Firstrow Schnitt 713, auch in der Burda 11/2007 zu finden. Den vorderen V-Ausschnitt habe ich allerdings zu einem weiten hohen Ausschnitt umgeändert. 

I played the music together with a friend during the ceremony, so it was of utmost importance that I could move my arms freely up and forward. This is always an issue for me, both with store bought and self made garments. I often feel restricted by the garments in the upper back and shoulder area, hindered to move my arms freely. And this is really bad when you have to concentrate on the music you are playing and need full freedom of movement! I have tried several types of alterations so far (broad back, bigger upper arms, forward shoulders), but together, they made pattern alterations quite complicated and even could not solve that problem completely.

Da ich auch während der Trauung mit einer Freundin zusammen die Musik machen sollte, war es äusserst wichtig, dass ich meine Arme in dem Kleid frei bewegen konnte. Das ist bisher immer ein Problem gewesen, bei gekaufter, aber auch bei selbstgenähter Kleidung. Im oberen Rückenbereich und um die Schultern sind mir die Sachen häufig etwas zu eng und halten meine Arme zurück, wenn ich sie nach vorne oder oben heben will. Das geht natürlich nicht, wenn man sich aufs Musizieren konzentrieren muss und dabei volle Bewegungsfreiheit braucht! Ich hatte schon nach den Anleitungen aus Büchern verschiedene Abänderungen ausprobiert (breiter Rücken, starke Oberarme, nach vorne fallende Schultern), aber die haben die Schnittänderungen sehr kompliziert gemacht und das Problem auch nicht zu meiner Zufriedenheit lösen können. 

This time, I decided to try it another way: to slash and spread the back bodice pattern just at the points where it feels tight. Here you can see where I cut my pattern. The blue part is where the pattern pieces came to overlap.

Dieses Mal wollte ich einen anderen Weg versuchen: ich habe das Schnittmuster vom Rückenteil genau dort aufgeschnitten und gestreckt, wo es sich immer zu eng anfühlt. Hier habe ich die Linien eingezeichnet, wo ich geschnitten habe. Auf der blauen Fläche überlappen sich die Teile. 

Of course I made a muslin! See how nicely I can move my arms forward? There are wrinkles under my arm and the fabric is taught at the back, but nothing holds my arms from moving. There are still some wrinkles at the sides when the arms are relaxed which I don't know where they come from, but for the moment this is okay for me. I'll try this method again in the future!

Das Probeteil war schon nicht schlecht. Jedenfalls kann ich so meine Arme gut nach vorne bewegen. Es gibt Zugfalten unter den Armen und der Stoff am Rücken ist schon stramm, aber nichts hält meine Arme zurück oder hindert sie an der Bewegung. Die Rückenansicht bei lockeren Armen ist ganz ok, bis auf die Falten an den Seiten. Wo die herkommen, habe ich noch nicht herausgefunden, kann aber im Moment damit leben. Diese Methode werde ich wohl noch öfter ausprobieren!

Then the dress came together quite quickly (luckily, as I only had one week to make it, paper pattern and muslin included). I could not find any matching in seam zipper, so I used a standard one instead. 

Das Kleid war dann relativ schnell zusammen genäht (musste es auch, ich hatte für alles nur eine Woche Zeit). Ich habe keinen farblich passenden Nahtreissverschluss gefunden, also habe ich einen "normalen" eingenäht und das hat diesmal auch ganz gut geklappt. 

The skirt part is underlined with petticoat tulle to give it some body and let it stick out. I added some trimming to the hem to make it look nicer.

Der Rockteil ist mit Petticoat-Tüll verstärkt, damit er schön absteht. Da der Saum nicht eingeschlagen wird, habe ich die Kante mit einer Spitzenkante verziert. 

A little extra that I added was the lining of the bodice, which is not required by the pattern instructions. But I love it so much more with lining!

Ausserdem habe ich das Oberteil und die Ärmel gefüttert. Das stand zwar nicht in der Anleitung, aber so finde ich es viel schöner!

I would totally want to wear this dress for christmas, but…. it is too cold around here for a dress like that! Long sleeved wool dresses are the way to go…

Ich würde das Kleid ja gerne zu Weihnachten tragen, aber… es ist hier viel zu kalt für so ein Kleid! Langärmlige Wollkleider sind da die bessere Wahl...

The orange Burda dress: reality

If only I had known - I would have made this dress earlier!

Hätte ich das gewusst, dann häte ich diesen Schnitt schon viel früher genäht!

The pattern is from Burdastyle magazine 5/2010, no. 102, and I was really afraid that it would come out  too wide and baggy, obsessing so much over this question that I never could bring myself to actually make it. But no problem at all, the dress turned out like I hoped: with a narrow enough high waist and a nice flared skirt and wide hem. I didn't make any alterations concerning the width of the dress. I reduced the width of the sleeves, though. Maybe the alteration that I didn't do only this time is of more interest: usually I have to shorten the bodice between my bust and waist for 2 cm. After measuring the pattern, I decided that this time I would not shorten anything, which was a good idea. So, if you want to make this dress, too, and have normal height, you might want to lengthen the bodice!

Der Schnitt ist aus der Burdastyle 5/2010, Nr. 102, und weil ich sehr befürchtet habe, dass das Kleid sehr weit und sackartig sein könnte, habe ich sehr lange gezögert, es zu nähen. Aber alle Befürchtungen waren umsonst, der Schnitt hat so funktioniert wie ich es mir erhofft hatte: die hohe Taille nicht enganliegend, aber eng genug, mit einem ausgestellten Rockteil und schön grosser Saumweite. Ich habe allerdings die Ärmel in der Weite reduziert, die waren mir zu puffig. Interessant ist vielleicht, dass ich eine sonst übliche Änderung diesmal weggelassen habe: normalerweise kürze ich alle Burda-Oberteilschnitte zwischen Brust und Taille um 2 cm. Dieses Mal habe ich nicht gekürzt und bin sehr froh darüber. Falls also jemand von euch diesen Schnitt selber nähen möchte und "normal" gross ist, empfehle ich, über eine Verlängerung des Oberteils nachzudenken.

I was a bit afraid of making the rouleau loops for the button loops, but they actually went well (the second time) with a bit of patience.

Ich hatte vorher noch nie ein so schmales Röllchen genäht, wie es für die Knopfschlingen benötigt wurde, aber das war halb so schlimm und hat (beim zweiten Mal) mit ein bisschen Geduld ganz gut funktioniert. 

What was worse was covering all those buttons with fabric - what a terrible and fiddly work! I almost gave up on those...

Schlimmer war es, all diese Knöpfe mit dem Stoff zu beziehen - eine fürchterliche und knifflige Arbeit! 

I'm really happy with this dress! Having said this, this is the only red garment in my closet since I'm old enough to chose what to wear on my own. I usually NEVER wear any red, and I don't like this color! I made an exception for this dress since I could not find any orange fabric, but felt that this pattern should be made up in a bright red or orange to work as desired. So, really a special dress!

Ich bin also insgesamt glücklich mit diesem Kleid! Erwähnenswert ist aber noch, dass das, seit ich alt genug bin, um meine Kleidung selbst auszusuchen, das erste und einzige rote Kleidungsstück ist, das ich besitze. Ich trage sonst niemals rot und mag diese Farbe eigentlich überhaupt nicht! Für dieses Kleid habe ich mal eine grosse Ausnahme gemacht, da ich das Gefühl hatte, dass der Schnitt nur in einer leuchtend orangen oder roten Farbe richtig wirkt, und Stoff in orange habe ich nicht gefunden...

The orange Burda dress: an illusion?

Since that issue came out, I'm swooning over this photo. I love the button loops and pin tucks at the front, the bright color that gives these traditional elements a fresh new look, and the great hem width. But I did not dare to make it so far.

Seitdem ich diese Ausgabe habe, schwärme ich für das Kleid auf diesem Foto. Mir gefällt die Knopfleiste mit den Schlaufen, die kleinen seitlichen Fältchen, die knallige Farbe die diesen traditionellen Elementen einen ganz neuen Anstrich gibt, und die grosse Saumweite. 
Ich habe mich bisher allerdings nicht getraut, es zu nähen.

The dress seems to be nothing more than a lengthened blouse (although a very pretty one), and there is nothing left from the nice flare of the skirt part in the photo above. And the waist is not very well defined, either. As an experienced Burda reader, if you look carefully at the photo above, you can also see that the waist is quite wide. And I don't want to end up with an orange sack dress.

Auf dieser Zeichnung ist das schöne Kleid nur noch eine verlängerte Bluse (eine sehr schöne allerdings), und von dem schönen ausgestellten Rockteil auf dem Foto ist nichts mehr übrig. Die Taille ist überhaupt nicht betont. Und wenn man als aufmerksamer Burda-Leser sich nochmal das Foto oben anschaut, fällt denn auch auf, dass die Taille an dem Kleid sehr weit ist. Nur eben sehr geschickt fotografiert. Und ich will kein Sackkleid nähen. 

However, on the magazine page where every model is put on a dress form this dress looks a bit different again:

Auf der Seite, auf der alle Modelle auf einer Büste fotografiert sind, sieht das Kleid allerdings wieder etwas anders aus. So gefällt es mir gut!

This is how I would love this dress. But I cannot quite recognize the dress from the technical drawing in this photo. Did the Burda people use the old display window trick and pinned the back to make the waist more fitted? (How odd would that be? As the magazine photos often don't show the garment very well, we have to rely on these dress form photos to see the silhouette of the patterns...)

Allerdings kann ich auf diesem Foto das Kleid von der technischen Zeichnung kaum wiedererkennen. Hat Burda zu dem alten Schaufenster-Trick gegriffen und das Kleid am Rücken einfach enger gesteckt? (Das wäre allerdings nicht so toll. Nachdem man auf den Fotos in den Zeitschriften oft sowieso nicht viel von den Kleidern erkennen kann, sollte man sich eigentlich auf diese Sammelfotos verlassen können...)

I finally decided to test it out. I'll make this dress and see how it fits. I will start with basting all those seams, and if it's too wide, maybe I can take the vertical back seams in to come a bit closer to the dress in the last photo. Or I can make a belt to go with it. Maybe I'll get another idea during the process. If everything fails, I can cut the dress below the waist and make it a blouse!

Ich habe jetzt beschlossen, es auszuprobieren. Ich werde dieses Kleid nähen und dann mal schauen, wie es aussieht. Vielleicht werde ich alle Nähte erst mal heften, dann kann ich die rückwärtigen Nähte später noch etwas enger machen, wenn das Kleid zu weit ist. Oder ich kann einen extra Gürtel nähen. vielleicht fällt mir auch noch etwas anderes ein. Schlimmstenfalls kann ich es abschneiden und als Bluse tragen!

I made a Swimsuit!

I'm still there and sewing! I'm just behind with posting my projects...
I wanted to try to make a swimsuit since I got my serger last year, only to see if I could do it, and now I got infected with the swimsuit fever all around here in the sewing blogosphere, so I decided this was the right moment to try.

Ich bin noch da und nähe noch, aber ich bin mit dem Bloggen etwas in Rückstand geraten...
Seit letztem Jahr, als ich meine Overlock bekommen habe, reizt es mich schon, einen Badeanzug zu nähen, nur um mal zu sehen, ob ich das schaffen kann. Und jetzt wurde ich vom allgemeinen Badeanzug-Hype in vielen Nähblogs mit angesteckt und fand, es wäre nun so weit. 

This is the result! I wanted to make it a bit retro style, with a skirt panel at the front, but in a modern swimsuit fabric. There is a great pattern for a swimsuit from Heather Lou of Closet Case Files, but I wanted mine without the ruffling at the front and back. So I used Burdastyle's Alison swimsuit pattern and drafted a matching skirt panel by myself. I also altered the leg openings to get more coverage. I don't like halter styles on me, so instead of tying the neckband behind my neck, I made them longer to form a cross on my back.

Hier ist das Ergebnis meines ersten Versuchs! Ich wollte einen Anzug, der ein bisschen retro ist und so einen schönen Rockteil vorne hat, aber nicht wie früher in Baumwolle, sondern in richtigem Schwimmanzugstoff. Es gibt einen grossartigen Schnitt von Heather Lou von Closet Case Files, aber der ist vorne und hinten komplett gerüscht und das wollte ich nicht unbedingt. Ich habe also den Alison Badeanzug-Schnitt von Burdastyle verwendet und den Rockteil dazu selber gezeichnet. Ich habe auch die Beinöffnungen etwas weiter nach unten versetzt. Der Original-Schnitt wird im Nacken geschlossen, was mir an mir auch nicht gefällt, also habe ich die Bänder länger gemacht und sie im Rücken über Kreuz fixiert. 

I finished the leg openings with chlorine resistant elastic, and also the hem of the skirt panel. When I tried the suit on, I felt that it was not sitting tight enough on the bust area, which I thought might be because I left off the back strap (there is one in the original Burdastyle design). I took the side seams in at the top, but that did not help a lot. Then, I ripped off the band that goes around the back and up the sides of the front and again to the back, reattached it with a bit more stretch, and also backed that seam with elastic. That made a huge difference! Now everything feels safely supported.

Die Beinöffnungen und den Saum des Rockteils habe ich mit chlorresistentem Gummi verstärkt. Als ich den Anzug anprobiert habe, sass er im Brustbereich nicht stramm genug, und ich hatte Angst, dass der Anzug "wegschwimmen" würde sobald ich ins Wasser ginge. Vielleicht deshalb, weil ich das zusätzliche Bindeband am Rücken weglassen wollte? Ich habe zunächst die Seitennähte oben etwas enger gemacht, das hat etwas geholfen, aber nicht viel. Dann habe ich das Band, das um den Rücken herum, seitlich vorne herauf und dann wieder zum Rücken verläuft, wieder abgetrennt, mit etwas mehr Dehnen wieder angenäht und vor allem auch hier Gummi mitgefasst. Riesenunterschied! Jetzt fühlt sich alles gut gehalten...

There are some obvious flaws, but they don't bother me too much. The side seam is pulled to the front where the front leg opening meets the side seam, and there is a fancy ruffling at my left bust cup - this is due to the bad pattern instructions, they don't tell you where to start with ruffling the bust insert, so I had to guess where, and I did a bit too much ruffling on this side (and I know I'll have to practice on my serger stitching).

Wie zu erwarten, gibt es einige Mängel, aber mit denen kann ich leben. Die Seitennaht wird dort, wo der vordere Beinausschnitt auf die Seitennaht trifft, ziemlich nach vorne gezogen. Dann ist da diese komische Beule an meinem linken Körbchen - die kommt daher, weil die Nähanleitung von Burdastyle eine absolute Katastrophe ist und man nicht weiss, wo man mit dem Einreihen des Brusteinsatzes beginnen soll, oder wie viel. An der linken Seite hatte ich halt etwas zu viel oder zu früh eingereiht. (Und ich weiss, dass ich das Nähen mit der Overlock noch üben muss, speziell das Gummiannähen.)

The fabric was surprisingly easy to sew, even easier than some of the t-shirt jerseys I had already used before. It would be no big deal to make the whole thing only on a sewing machine (in fact, I "machine basted" all the seams with a zigzag stitch on my sewing machine before "really" sewing them with my serger. That made it easier to rip them when it was necessary).
To test the sewability of the swimsuit fabric first, I made a pair of swimming trunks for my husband first. (I love that fabric with the sharks on it!)

Der Stoff selbst war erstaunlich gut zu nähen, sogar einfacher als so mancher T-Shirt-Jersey, das hätte ich wirklich nicht gedacht. Man könnte alles auch mit einer normalen Nähmaschine nähen (ich habe sogar jede Naht erst mal mit der Nähmaschine und ZickzackStich genäht und dann erst mit der Overlock - das hat das Auftrennen doch sehr vereinfacht). 
Um den Stoff erst mal zu testen, hat mein Mann auch erst mal eine Badehose bekommen (ausserdem konnte ich dem Haifischmuster nicht widerstehen). 

The on-road test of my swimsuit went well. I could swim with it, the straps didn't slide off my shoulder, and even a ride on the waterslide wasn't any problem. Next time, though, I think I would also add some elastic to the top of the bust cups, as they are being pulled down just a little bit while swimming. Adding elastic was really the most important thing to get it sitting nicely, at least for me!

Der Praxistest lief soweit auch ganz gut. Ich konnte gut Bahnen schwimmen, die Bänder sind mir nicht von den Schultern gerutscht wie erst befürchtet, und auch auf der Wasserrutsche gab es keine Probleme. Nächstes Mal würde ich allerdings auch die "Körbchen" oben mit einem Gummi verstärken, da die beim Schwimmen doch ein ganz klein wenig nach unten gezogen wurden. Ich finde, der Gummi hilft doch sehr dabei, das der Anzug sicher sitzt!

Burdastyle Retro Spring Dress

Gerade vor ein paar Tagen ist es fertig geworden: mein Retro-Burda-Frühlingskleid. Der Schnitt ist aus der Burdastyle 1/2013, Nr. 106 (man kann den Schnitt auch hier einzeln herunterladen). 

The pattern is based on a vintage Burda model that they featured in their magazine in 1967. What a funny thing to find out that I own the issue with this very dress in it!

Der Schnitt ist ein alter Burda-Schnitt von 1967, in der modernen Burdastyle neu aufgelegt. Zufällig habe ich herausgefunden, dass ich sogar genau die alte Ausgabe mit diesem Kleid besitze!

I'm a bit surprised by the title of the page, though. Translated, it means "children's dresses for young women". Was it really attractive to the young women of the time to be dressed like children?

Die Überschrift zu dem Kleid hat mich allerdings etwas erstaunt. Fanden es die jungen Damen von damals wirklich erstrebenswert, Kleider im Stil von Kinderkleidern zu tragen??

The technical drawing in the old magazine. The pattern came in only one size. New Burda omitted two of the vertical seams, and distributed them in another way than vintage Burda did. Which is funny, as they tell in the new magazine that it is the very same model!

Die technische Zeichnung in der alten Burda-Ausgabe. Den Schnitt gab es nur in einer einzigen Grösse. Ausserdem hat die neue Burda zwei der Querteilungsnähte unterschlagen (es gibt in der Zeitschrift allerdings noch ein Modell mit vier Teilungsnähten), und sie hat diese Nähte auch anscheinend anders verteilt. Soviel zur angeblichen Originaltreue des Schnitts!

For my dress, I did not use any lace for the sleeves, nor did I embroider them with a thousand pearls as the vintage instruction say. I used wool crepe for the entire dress. To keep a bit of the vintage look, I did not use a hidden seam zipper, but instead a "normal" one, which I put in by hand in the center back. I just love when there are a few hand sewn seams in a garment like that!

Ich habe für mein Kleid Wollkrepp verwendet, auch für die Ärmel. Die habe ich weder aus Spitze genäht noch mit etwas über Tausend Perlen wie in der Vintage-Anleitung bestickt. Schliesslich wollte ich ein alltagstaugliches Kleid haben. Um trotzdem etwas retro zu bleiben, habe ich anstelle des Nahtreissverschlusses einen "normalen" verwendet, den ich per Hand eingenäht habe. Ausserdem liebe ich handgearbeitete Nähte an einem Kleidungsstück wie diesem!

I also lined the dress, to make sure that the wool crepe would not stick to my undergarments when moving around, and finished the lining hem with a bit of lace. (Before sewing on the lace, I hemmed the lining with my narrow hem foot, for practice.)

Ich habe das Kleid gefüttert, damit der Wollkrepp nicht an der Unterwäsche "kleben" bleibt. Den Futtersaum habe ich erst mit meinem Saumfuss umgenäht (nur zur Übung) und dann noch Spitze angenäht. 

The only issue I had was with the sleeves. I didn't make any test garment, only my usual alterations for Burdastyle patterns, but I found out that not only the sleeves themselves, but also the armholes were too small! I've never had that problem before, still wondering where that comes from. Are the sleeves in this pattern simply cut smaller or did I gain some weight on my upper arms and shoulders? I let the seams out as much as possible, and although the fit of the sleeve is still not great, I'm at least able to move my arms! I'll have to check on this... Hope you like my dress!

Das einzige Problem bei diesem Kleid waren die Ärmel. Ich habe kein Testmodell genäht, sondern nur die üblichen Änderungen für Burda-Schnitte vorab am Papierschnitt gemacht, und dachte, das müsste jetzt passen, wie sonst auch. Aber entweder sind die Ärmel bei diesem Modell sehr schmal geschnitten oder ich habe an den Oberarmen und Schultern mächtig zugelegt. Es waren nämlich sowohl die Ärmel wie auch die Armlöcher zu eng! Das Problem hatte ich vorher nie... Ich habe die Nahtzugaben maximal rausgelassen, und obwohl die Ärmel immer noch nicht perfekt passen und aussehen, kann ich jetzt wenigstens wieder meine Arme bewegen. Da muss ich mal bei den nächsten Projekten drauf achten... Das Kleid gefällt mir trotzdem!

No More Balloon Sleeves

I still need some warm blouses for winter, so I was searching all my Burdastyle magazines to find a nice pattern. I like no. 107 from the january 2010 issue. The fabric I wanted to use is a thin wool microfiber blend, and the original Burdastyle blouse was made in a chiffon, so I expected that I might get some issues with the heavier weight of the fabric, but all went well with that.

Ich brauche immer noch ein paar warme Oberteile für den Winter. Beim Durchblättern meiner Burda-Magazine hat mir das Modell 107 aus der Januar 2010-Ausgabe wirklich gut gefallen. Allerdings hatte ich einen Stoff aus einem Wolle-Mikrofaser-Gemisch, wohingegen das Originalmodell aus der Burda aus Chiffon ist. Ich habe also aus diesem Grund schon mit Problemen gerechnet, aber mit dem Stoff lief alles bestens. 

The blouse has some shirring in the front, a small standing collar, and a very clever closure: it opens at the front of the left shoulder and is closed with snaps and a button at the collar.

Die Bluse ist vorne in der Mitte gerüscht, hat einen kleinen Stehkragen, aber das Beste ist der Verschluss: eine Druckknopfleiste vorn an der linken Schulter, wirklich clever!

But... it has also long, wide and puffy sleeves! I always like them when I see them on the technical drawings, but unfortunately, they don't seem to do any benefits to my short arms.

Der Burda-Schnitt hat auch noch weite, lange Puffärmel. Ich liebe lange Puffärmel wenn ich sie auf Zeichnungen oder Fotos sehe. Sie sehen immer gleichzeitig bequem und elegant aus. Leider aber nicht an mir. Auf der Büste sah es noch gut aus. 

But when I was wearing it, I felt like I was wearing two balloons at my arms, making my arms look even shorter, something like that (I was too disappointed to take any photos):

Aber als ich die Bluse getragen habe, wirkten die Ärmel nur plump und meine eh schon kurzen Arme sahen noch kürzer aus. (Fotos habe ich nicht, ich war in dem Moment zu genervt.)

So I altered the sleeve pattern to have some medium width sleeves, cut the sleeves again (luckily there was enough fabric left, which was actually intended to become a dress), and set them in. Much better now! (Although a little bit less comfortable.)
It took me forever. I wasn't motivated at all to restart with the blouse after having already worn it, but I didn't like it how it was and the fabric has been too expensive to throw it all away. Now I can finally show you my new winter blouse - I don't need it anymore at the moment as spring has arrived in the meantime. But I'm looking forward to get a lot of wear out of it next winter (and I still wish I could wear wide ballony sleeves)!

Ich habe also die Ärmel wieder herausgetrennt, den Ärmelschnitt verschmälert und die Rüschung entfernt, und dann nochmal neu zugeschnitten und neu eingesetzt. Glücklicherweise war noch genug Stoff übrig (ich hatte eigentlich vor, aus dem Rest noch ein Kleid zu nähen). Jetzt gefällt es mir viel besser! (Die Ärmel sind jetzt allerdings eine Idee weniger bequem). 
Die Änderung hat ewig gedauert. Erst mal hatte ich schon keine Lust mehr, nochmal bei der Bluse nachzuarbeiten. Dann habe ich sehr lange überlegt, was ich überhaupt mit den Ärmeln machen soll. Der Stoff war zu teuer und zu schade, um alles einfach in die Tonne zu treten. Jetzt bin ich aber ganz zufrieden damit. Es hat jetzt nur so lange gedauert, dass inzwischen Frühling geworden ist und die Bluse einfach zu warm ist, um sie zu tragen. Macht aber nix, im nächsten Winter werde ich sie sicher gerne tragen!

Oh, and I'm also taking part in Me-Made-May'13. It was such a nice experience last year!

Ich habe mich zum Me-Made-May'13 angemeldet! Es war eine tolle Erfahrung letztes Jahr, und ich finde es so unglaublich, dass so viele Näherinnen aus der ganzen Welt daran teilnehmen und in Kontakt treten...
