Not a Christmas Dress

I was invited to a wedding about two months ago and needed a dress for the occasion. So I made up this dress with dupioni silk from my stash and with Burda Firstrow pattern 713. It was also in the 11/2007 magazine. I altered the front neckline to have almost a boatneck instead of a deep V.

Ende Oktober war ich zu einer Hochzeit eingeladen und brauchte ein Kleid dafür. Ich habe also dieses Kleid genäht, mit Dupion-Seide aus meinem Vorrat und dem Burda Firstrow Schnitt 713, auch in der Burda 11/2007 zu finden. Den vorderen V-Ausschnitt habe ich allerdings zu einem weiten hohen Ausschnitt umgeändert. 

I played the music together with a friend during the ceremony, so it was of utmost importance that I could move my arms freely up and forward. This is always an issue for me, both with store bought and self made garments. I often feel restricted by the garments in the upper back and shoulder area, hindered to move my arms freely. And this is really bad when you have to concentrate on the music you are playing and need full freedom of movement! I have tried several types of alterations so far (broad back, bigger upper arms, forward shoulders), but together, they made pattern alterations quite complicated and even could not solve that problem completely.

Da ich auch während der Trauung mit einer Freundin zusammen die Musik machen sollte, war es äusserst wichtig, dass ich meine Arme in dem Kleid frei bewegen konnte. Das ist bisher immer ein Problem gewesen, bei gekaufter, aber auch bei selbstgenähter Kleidung. Im oberen Rückenbereich und um die Schultern sind mir die Sachen häufig etwas zu eng und halten meine Arme zurück, wenn ich sie nach vorne oder oben heben will. Das geht natürlich nicht, wenn man sich aufs Musizieren konzentrieren muss und dabei volle Bewegungsfreiheit braucht! Ich hatte schon nach den Anleitungen aus Büchern verschiedene Abänderungen ausprobiert (breiter Rücken, starke Oberarme, nach vorne fallende Schultern), aber die haben die Schnittänderungen sehr kompliziert gemacht und das Problem auch nicht zu meiner Zufriedenheit lösen können. 

This time, I decided to try it another way: to slash and spread the back bodice pattern just at the points where it feels tight. Here you can see where I cut my pattern. The blue part is where the pattern pieces came to overlap.

Dieses Mal wollte ich einen anderen Weg versuchen: ich habe das Schnittmuster vom Rückenteil genau dort aufgeschnitten und gestreckt, wo es sich immer zu eng anfühlt. Hier habe ich die Linien eingezeichnet, wo ich geschnitten habe. Auf der blauen Fläche überlappen sich die Teile. 

Of course I made a muslin! See how nicely I can move my arms forward? There are wrinkles under my arm and the fabric is taught at the back, but nothing holds my arms from moving. There are still some wrinkles at the sides when the arms are relaxed which I don't know where they come from, but for the moment this is okay for me. I'll try this method again in the future!

Das Probeteil war schon nicht schlecht. Jedenfalls kann ich so meine Arme gut nach vorne bewegen. Es gibt Zugfalten unter den Armen und der Stoff am Rücken ist schon stramm, aber nichts hält meine Arme zurück oder hindert sie an der Bewegung. Die Rückenansicht bei lockeren Armen ist ganz ok, bis auf die Falten an den Seiten. Wo die herkommen, habe ich noch nicht herausgefunden, kann aber im Moment damit leben. Diese Methode werde ich wohl noch öfter ausprobieren!

Then the dress came together quite quickly (luckily, as I only had one week to make it, paper pattern and muslin included). I could not find any matching in seam zipper, so I used a standard one instead. 

Das Kleid war dann relativ schnell zusammen genäht (musste es auch, ich hatte für alles nur eine Woche Zeit). Ich habe keinen farblich passenden Nahtreissverschluss gefunden, also habe ich einen "normalen" eingenäht und das hat diesmal auch ganz gut geklappt. 

The skirt part is underlined with petticoat tulle to give it some body and let it stick out. I added some trimming to the hem to make it look nicer.

Der Rockteil ist mit Petticoat-Tüll verstärkt, damit er schön absteht. Da der Saum nicht eingeschlagen wird, habe ich die Kante mit einer Spitzenkante verziert. 

A little extra that I added was the lining of the bodice, which is not required by the pattern instructions. But I love it so much more with lining!

Ausserdem habe ich das Oberteil und die Ärmel gefüttert. Das stand zwar nicht in der Anleitung, aber so finde ich es viel schöner!

I would totally want to wear this dress for christmas, but…. it is too cold around here for a dress like that! Long sleeved wool dresses are the way to go…

Ich würde das Kleid ja gerne zu Weihnachten tragen, aber… es ist hier viel zu kalt für so ein Kleid! Langärmlige Wollkleider sind da die bessere Wahl...

Fitting Mistakes

I have infected my friend N. with the sewing virus. About a year ago, she became interested in sewing and so I showed her the basics and told her all that I know. Now, she is starting to sew clothes on her own and when she needs help, she sends me a photo or we meet and I try my best to lead her through the process.
Her actual sewing project is Burdastyle's popular peplum top from the 8/2012 issue. And although we had made a muslin before, we had to face some serious fitting problems when the garment was almost finished.

Ich habe meine Freundin N. mit dem Nähvirus infiziert. Sie hat sich immer für meine Nähprojekte interessiert, und nachdem ich ihr vor etwa einem Jahr die Grundlagen beigebracht habe, näht sie selbst ihre eigenen Projekte. Wenn sie Hilfe braucht, schickt sie mir ein Foto oder wir treffen uns und ich bemühe mich, ihr weiter zu helfen. 
Ihr aktuelles Projekt ist das beliebte Schösschentop aus der Burdastyle 8/2012. Und obwohl wir vorher ein Probeteil gemacht hatten, sah das fast fertige Top gar nicht schön aus. 

As you can see on the (bad) photo (it was taken with an iPad), there was a lot of puckering at the armhole seam, and stress wrinkles which go from over the bust towards the armpits. The whole garment seams to be pulled to N.'s left side, which you can see at the neckline. (And the darts have not been properly pressed, but that is not a fitting issue.) So last week, we started to look for what was going wrong and how to save the top.

Wie man auf dem Bild sehen kann (trotz der schlechten Qualität, sie hat es schnell mit dem ipad aufgenommen), gibt es jede Menge kleiner Fältchen an der Armkugel, und Spannungsfalten über der Brust, die bis zu den Achseln verlaufen. Ausserdem scheint das ganze Top zu N.s linker Seite gezogen zu werden, was man am Halsausschnitt gut erkennen kann. (Die Abnäher sind auf dem Foto auch noch nicht richtig gebügelt, aber das war nicht das Hauptproblem.) Letzte Woche sind wir also der Sache nachgegangen. 

It turned out that something had gone wrong during finishing of the edges of the armhole seam allowances. After we removed the lining from the armholes and the finishing zigzag stitches, the sleeve puckers were almost completely gone. Maybe it has to do with the fabric which has some stretch in it? I don't know.

Erst einmal hat sich herausgestellt, dass wohl beim Versäubern des Armlochs irgend etwas schiefgegangen war. Denn schon als wir die Zickzack-Stiche aufgetrennt hatten, waren es schon etwas weniger Falten an der Armkugel. Vielleicht hatte das etwas mit dem Stoff zu tun, der Elasthan enthält. 

Next, the sleeves were taken out completely, followed by an endless basting the armhole seams, taking them out and rebasting them again, in order to eliminate the pulling to the left shoulder and the left puckers. At some point finally the shoulder seams sat right over the shoulder bones, and the puckering on the sleeve caps was gone. But the garment was still sitting too far left, looking at the neckline. Was it due to body asymmetry? What to do? And why didn't this problem appear in previous projects?

Danach haben wir die Ärmel komplett herausgetrennt und in mühevollem Rumprobieren eingeheftet, ausgetrennt, wieder eingeheftet... Irgendwann sassen dann die Ärmelnähte korrekt über den Schulterknochen, und die kleinen Fältchen in der Armkugel waren weg. Nur hatte es immer noch den Anschein, dass das ganze Kleidungsstück zur linken Seite gezogen würde. Wir dachten an eine Schulterasymmetrie, aber bisher war das Problem ja auch nicht aufgetreten...

After a lot of puzzling over it, I thought that maybe it wasn't a fitting problem at all. N. is still a beginner in sewing and maybe she hadn't sewn the neckline seam symmetrically? So we tried to correct this issue directly at the neckline seam and it seems to look better now. Whatever the problem really was.

Nach einigem Rumprobieren und Rätseln kam mir der Gedanke, dass das vielleicht gar kein Passformproblem war. N. ist noch Anfänger beim Nähen und hat möglicherweise den Halsausschnitt nicht gleichmässig symmetrisch genäht? Wir haben also direkt am Halsausschnitt an der Besatznaht weiterprobiert und es scheint jetzt tatsächlich besser zu sein als vorher (was auch immer das tatsächliche Problem sein mag). 

We didn't manage to eliminate the stress wrinkles on the front that are going under the arms. And I think I know why: the armhole is too small. In the muslin, the armhole was awfully gaping at the front, which I pinned out. Therefore, the armhole was smaller, and the sleeve cap would not fit into it, so I had to adjust for that, too. Since N. has thin arms, I made the sleeve cap smaller at the front. Now that I see those wrinkles I'm sure that the right way would have been to lower the armhole instead. I did that now in the almost finished garment as much as it was possible while still being able to set the sleeves in again, and the wrinkles are reduced, but not gone.

Die Falten über der Brust haben wir nicht ganz wegbekommen, und ich weiss auch, warum: das Armloch ist schlicht und einfach zu klein. Am Probeteil stand das Armloch vorne ziemlich weit ab, also habe ich einen Keil abgesteckt und den Papierschnitt entsprechend verändert. Damit war das Armloch kleiner und der Ärmle hätte nicht mehr ins Loch gepasst. Um dafür auszugleichen, habe ich auch die Armkugel vorne etwas verkleinert - N. hat ja eh so dünne Arme -, und das war der Fehler! Ich hätte wohl besser die Armlochtiefe angepasst. Ich habe jetzt im Nachhinein versucht, noch etwas Tiefe aus dem Armloch herauszuholen, aber es hat nicht ganz gelangt. Die Falten sind zwar weniger, aber nicht verschwunden. 

Sorry, N.! I'll think twice while fitting your muslin next time! After all, I think the top is now wearable at least, and we learnt something.
By the way, N. is thinking about shortening the sleeves to a 3/4-lenghth. What do you think? (Photo pre-fitting)

Liebe N., es tut mir leid, diesmal hat es nicht ganz geklappt. Beim nächsten Probeteil werde ich zweimal nachdenken. Ich denke aber, das Top ist jetzt zumindest tragbar und wir haben was gelernt. 
Übrigens überlegt N., ob sie die Ärmel nicht auf eine 3/4-Länge kürzen soll. Was meint Ihr? (Foto ist ein Vorher-Foto)

Summer Shorts

Are you being asked by your husbands, boyfriends, brothers... to sew garments for them? I try to push my husband to let me make him a duffle coat every winter, but he refuses, and he doesn't want to get anything for him sewn by me either. With one exception: shorts! He gets a pair of them every year, and as we skipped last year, I had to make two pairs for this summer. Of course he has also bought ones, but he keeps telling me that those made by me are the best, and who can withstand such a wise and true argument?

So this is the first pair, made of a thicker cotton poplin, with huge pockets at the sides. I used the same pattern as always, although I made a muslin again to fit the pants. Again, it became clear to me that sewing pants is easy, whereas fitting pants is a nightmare. I know I didn't get it perfectly, but I couldn't do it any better, it's just too difficult. Especially men's pants. But my husband likes them, so I think the whole project can be assessed as a success.

This time, the shorts look nice from the inside, too, thanks to my new cover locker. I still have to practice going around curves, though. 

For the second pair I had a sturdier fabric, so I decided to make these up in a jeans style, with a fifth pocket and metal rivets and topstitching and everything.

They came out quite nicely, especially when you don't look at the snatchy topstitching at the fly-front. The topstitching with the thicker fabric was the worst part, after all. I was sewing with a pair of bought jeans at my side, to check the right jeans construction during the process.

I think this pair does even look quite good at the back, better than the older ones:

Please excuse all the wrinkles, once this man had put the shorts on, he didn't want to put them off again.
Now, my sewing duty for this year is carried out, and I can sew for myself again!

The Vienna Gala Evening Dress: First Try-On

I was really, really excited when I slipped into my dress this first time. The intended fit is quite snug and I want to be sure that the dress will fit, so I decided to baste it all together first for a fitting, something I've never done before, I usually just rely on my muslin. But this time I did not want to take any risk.

I found the perfect fabric for it already some months ago in my favorite fabric store, it is a very nice taffeta in a silk-cotton blend with a soft lustre. I decided to underline the whole dress with silk organza to get a crispy touch.
(Sad news: my favorite fabric store doesn't have any silk organza any more, and they will not be able to sell it any more in the future. So I'll have to look for another source for that stuff, as I don't get it anywhere else around here.)




I also added a second layer of underlining to the back bodice and lower front bodice parts to which I attached the boning channels (cotton twill tape in my case).

The instructions to do so come from Susan Khalje's "Bridal Couture", which is sort of my "teacher" in making this dress.

I also cut the spiral steel boning, which I'm glad that it's done now.


Then I basted the dress together by hand. I also basted a zipper in the back, as there is nobody to pin me into and out of the dress.

The first thought when I had the dress put on? It looks a lot better made up in a nice black fabric than in the muslin (which is actually an old bedsheet). Phew!

I am really glad that I did the basting before actually sewing it, though. The bedsheet fabric stretched out more than the taffeta, so the dress is a bit too snug around the lower bodice. I also decided to lower the skirt for about 1.5 cm (given that my seam allowances are only 2 cm, that means I'll lower the skirt as much as possible).

And I will gather the front skirt only at the sides, because the gathering all the front long does look good in the front view, but in the side view it makes a funny bump that is not very flattering!

And this is how it looks like at the back:

Not too bad, I think. The excess fabric at the bottom is the vent underlap, as this is not a critical part to be fitted I just left it open.

Altogether, I am really happy with it, the fitting issues are easy enough to solve and I'm happy that I do know about them now. Better for my nerves. And hand basting the whole thing didn't take as much time as I expected but was well worth it. I already took the dress apart again and now I'm off to putting it all together!
