New Favorite Winter Dress

When I found this mustard wool knit fabric in my local Bernina store, I couldn't resist buying it and making it into a dress.

Als ich diesen Wolljersey im Bernina-Geschäft gesichtet hatte, konnte ich nicht widerstehen (wer könnte auch?).

The pattern I used is a vintage one, and by chance it was my size already and even a petite size, so I did neither have to do any pattern grading nor do any alterations on it, wow!

Für das Kleid habe ich einen Vintage-Schnitt verwendet. Der war schon direkt in meiner Grösse und sogar als Kurzgrösse, und ich musste den Schnitt diesmal nicht nur nicht vergrössern oder verkleinern, sondern auch sonst gar keine Anpassungen vornehmen!

I did not like the ruched collar, though the dress looked a bit bland without anything, so I drafted a peter pan collar myself. I attached the collar with some snaps at the neckline facing to make it detachable for washing, which meant a bit of fiddling around, as I could not find any instructions for detachable collars at all. Please ignore the blue markings: I used some sort of magic pen to mark the positions of the snaps and forgot how to remove the markings as I threw away the packaging.

Der Rüschenkragen hat mir an dem Schnitt nicht so gefallen, allerdings sah das Kleid ganz ohne Kragen auch ein bisschen fad aus, also habe ich mir einen Bubikragen selbst konstruiert und genäht. Der Kragen ist mit Druckknöpfen am Halsaussschnittbesatz befestigt, damit ich ihn zum Waschen abnehmen kann. Ich konnte für abnehmbare Kragen leider keine Anleitung finden und habe es auch nicht perfekt hingekriegt, die Druckknopfleiste ist etwas verknorkelt, aber die sieht man ja nicht. Leider habe ich die Verpackung von meinem magischen Stift weggeworfen und weiss jetzt auch nicht mehr, wie ich die blauen Markierungen wieder aus dem Stoff rausbekomme...

The honeycomb decoration at the hem was already in the fabric, on both sides of the selvage. Of course, an A-line skirt is not ideal to use a straight decoration boarder at the hem, but I didn't know where else to place it and decided to try it anyway. It doesn't look too crooked, I think. If it would not have worked out, my plan was to cut the dress above the honeycombs and set on a tier without decoration.

Das Wabenmuster war bereits im Stoff, an beiden Kanten sogar. Ein ausgestellter Rock ist jetzt natürlich nicht so ideal, um so eine Kantenverzierung an den Saum zu legen. Ich konnte mir die Verzierung aber an anderer Stelle nicht so richtig vorstellen (den Ärmel entlang? an der Taille? am Oberteil?) und habe dann beschlossen es trotzdem so zu versuchen. Ich finde es sieht nicht allzu schräg aus. Im Notfall hätte ich das Kleid oberhalb der Waben abgeschnitten und eine extra Stufe angesetzt. 

Although I could have done a better job in matching the honeycombs at the center back…

Allerdings hätte ich mir hinten etwas mehr Mühe geben können, an der mittleren Naht das Muster entsprechend fortzusetzen...

And that's it: my new favorite dress! :-)

The Mother-in-Law Dress

Unlike many other women, I have a good relationship to my mother-in-law. In fact, she is one of the nicest persons in my family!
Look what she gave me on her last visit:

Meine Schwiegermutter und ich, wir verstehen uns sehr gut. Sie ist eine der nettesten Personen in meiner Familie! 
Und bei ihrem letzten Besuch hat sie mir etwas Besonderes mitgebracht: 

I's an old dress of hers in cotton fabric in one of my favorite colors and with polka dots! It has quite broad shoulders with puffed sleeves, pleats at the neckline, and is buttoned down at the back. There has also been a belt, but it got lost and doesn't exist anymore.
There was also an extra collar to go with it, but with no possibility to attach it to the dress.

Ein Kleid, das sie vor Jahren einmal selbst getragen hat, aus Baumwolle, in einer meiner Lieblingsfarben und mit Punkten! Es hat recht weit geschnittene Schultern, Puffärmel, Falten am Halsausschnitt, und ist am Rücken durchgeknöpft. Ursprünglich hat es auch einen Gürtel dazu gegeben, aber der ist verloren gegangen. 
Ein süsser Kragen war auch dabei, allerdings ohne eine Möglichkeit, ihn am Kleid zu befestigen. 

The tag inside says "VEB Exquisit Moden, Berlin". "VEB" stands for  "Volkseigener Betrieb", the legal status of all companies in the former German Democratic Republic. So it's clear that the dress is old, probably from the 80s.

Auf dem Etikett steht "VEB Exquisit Moden Berlin". "VEB" bedeutet "volkseigener Betrieb", das war die Geschäftsform von allen Betrieben in der ehemaligen DDR. Das Kleid ist also schon etwas älter, ich schätze mal, aus den 80er Jahren. 

So I made my first try in up cycling! After a lot of pinning, ripping and basting I got this:

Mit dem Kleid habe ich also meinen ersten Upcycling-Versuch gemacht. Nach einer Menge Abstecken, Heften und Trennen habe ich nun dieses Kleid: 

I removed the sleeves completely to get those oversized shoulders. The armholes are now finished with bias tape. I narrowed the whole dress and added two waist darts in the front and two darts in the back. I liked the collar so much, I just stitched it definitely to the dress. And I added an old belt that I had in my closet for years.

Ich habe die Ärmel ganz entfernt und nur die überschnittenen Schultern belassen. Die Armlöcher habe ich ganz einfach mit Schrägband verstürzt. Dann habe ich das ganze Kleid enger gemacht und jeweils zwei Abnäher an der Taille vorne und hinten eingefügt. Der Kragen gefiel mir so gut, dass ich ihn kurzerhand einfach am Halsausschnitt festgenäht habe. Der Gürtel ist schon alt und liegt schon seit Jahren bei mir im Kleiderschrank herum, jetzt hat er endlich ein Kleidungsstück das zu ihm passt!

My hope was to have enough fabric so I could end up with a gathered skirt, but it was not possible. So I left the buttoned down back as it was.

Eigentlich hatte ich gehofft, genug Stoff zu haben, um das Rockteil abzutrennen und gedreht als weiten Rock wieder anzunähen. Es war aber nicht genug, ich habe den Rock nur etwa 10 cm kürzer gemacht. Daher habe ich den Rücken so durchgeknöpft gelassen. 

And now I have a totally new dress! Thank you so much, mother-in-law!

Und so habe ich jetzt ein neues Kleid! Danke, liebe Schwiegermutter!
Nachtrag: meine Schwiegermutter hat mir ein Bild geschickt, auf dem sie selbst das Kleid trägt! Das Foto wurde um 1972 aufgenommen. 

Tailoring goes on

The most exciting part of the coat (at least for me): that what is called "the turning of the cloth" in my instruction book. Doesn't that sound great, like the title of an opera or Shakespeare play?

In practice it was less theatrical. First I stitched the undercollar to the coat. 

Then I stitched the upper collar to the facing, and pinned the whole part to the neckline seam of the coat. 

Then I put the coat on my dressform and smoothed the collars out. As both collars are "folded" at the roll line, the upper collar does not meet the edge of the undercollar. I marked the line where the upper collar ends with pins. 

And then finally I stitched the upper collar-facing part to the undercollar-garment part, right sides facing. I have to admit I took a few shortcuts here. The result is - not at all a perfect collar, but the best collar I've ever sewn, and I am really happy with it! Doesn't it look nice?

What you can't see on the photo: some hairs of the hair canvas of the undercollar do prick through the fabric. I cut them short but still they tend to peek out... luckily, there is enough fabric between my neck and the collar so it will not bother me a lot. 

I also set in the sleeves, and I added sleeve heads! I like how sleeve caps are decently supported by sleeveheads. I had to cut them smaller after putting them in, tough, as my shoulders were looking too square first (same reason why I don't like shoulder pads). 

I also hemmed the coat already, so now it is ready to get its lining, to hide everything that is inside the coat now! I can't wait the coat to be finished (anyway, there will be no occasion to wear it in the next time, as the temperature here jumped up to around 30°C! This happens to me everytime I make a jacket or coat, it's a bit annoying).
